Big River is a project which aims to bring together open spatial data resources covering the Amazonia region. The project has been started to mark the holding of this year's FOSS4G international conference in Belém, Brazil (and the journey that I hope to make to get there!). Big River is the initiative of Graeme Herbert, a geospatial consultant based in Madrid, Spain (visit Red Baobab for more information about me). Big River uses TerriaMap open source software, developed by Data61 working closely with the Department of Communications and the Arts, Geoscience Australia and other government agencies. Much of the data you see here is provided by government agencies from the countries making up the Amazonia region. Other data comes from other organisations working in the region, or is a derived product from these sources.

To view the data available in Big River, open the Data Catalogue in the Big River home page. Click the Data Catalogue tab and expand the Data Set group names to see all of the categories of data available, either for Amazonia in general or for individual countries. Help is available for users via the option Help and FAQs.
For further information or other enquiries about the project you can email info@redbaobab.com. All feedback is very welcome.
Big River can display data using a variety of geospatial formats, including OGC services such as WMS or WFS. If you have data which can be made available publicly, and would like to see this data displayed on Big River, then please get in touch.
Some data is stored directly on the Big River server, but much of the data is accessed via services accessing the data servers of the providing agencies or organisations. Wherever possible this should be clear from the description provided for each dataset available here in the Data Catalog.

In developing the software, Data61 has used open source software and contributed back to it. Big River leverages these excellent open source libraries:
In addition to the above libraries Big River also makes significant use of the following open source geospatial tools for serving and processing spatial datasets for the project.
Every effort is made to fully acknowledge and describe the source of each dataset listed in the Big River data catalogue. If you feel that data has been inadequately or inaccurately attributed, please get in touch so that any errors or omissions can be corrected.
